In September of 2024, proposed changes to the Gene Technology Act 2000 (GT Act) were published for consultation with the intention to improve the agility and flexibility of the National Gene Technology Scheme (Scheme).
In a continued effort to ensure that the Scheme remains risk proportionate, and fit-for-purpose, amendments to the Gene Technology Regulations 2001 (GT Regulations) are required to underpin the proposed changes to the GT Act. A consultation paper has been developed to explain the proposed changes to the GT Regulations. We are now seeking your feedback on these proposed changes.
Key documents have been published on the consultation hub to help stakeholders provide their feedback:
- Consultation Paper – January 2026 – Gene Technology Amendment Regulations.
- Information Sheet - Summary of Authorisation Pathways
- Consultation questions on the proposed amendments to the Gene Technology Regulations 2001
Submissions are open from 5 January 2026 until 1 March 2026.
All consultation submissions are to be submitted via the consultation hub.
Have your say on the proposed approach to amending the Gene Technology Regulations.
