On 13 April 2023, the Gene Technology Ministers’ Meeting (GTMM) met via video conference and agreed to five key priorities for the National Gene Technology Scheme (Scheme) until 2025 and released the GTMM Action Plan 2023-2025:

  1. Legislative amendments to modernise and improve the Scheme
  2. Prepare for the next Review of the Scheme
  3. Guidance for Genetically Modified (GM) gene drive organisms
  4. Sustainable funding for the Scheme
  5. Increase stakeholder and public understanding of gene technology and its regulation under the Scheme

As of 28 February 2025, Ministers have reviewed this work program and agreed to publish an update to the GTMM Priorities until December 2025 to share the progress made against each priority. Priority 4 – Sustainable funding for the Scheme has been removed as the GTMM’s role in this matter is complete.

Ministers will continue to progress the remaining 4 priorities listed in the update to implement the recommendations of the Third Review of the National Gene Technology Scheme.
